Most of us are shocked when we discover that slavery still exists today.
At any given time 12.3 million people are enslaved in forced labor, bonded labor, forced child labor, sexual servitude and involuntary servitude around the world. Every year, 800,000 people will be trafficked across international lines.
The vast majority of these are women and children.
Of those numbers, 14,500 to 17,500 will end up in the United States where they are either brought involuntarily or exploited once they arrive. They are primarily from Southeast Asia, Latin America and other poor regions – victims of poverty, war, disasters and greed.
We are saddened and outraged by this and desire to support the efforts of World Relief as they work to identify victims of human trafficking in the United States and provide them with comprehensive services such as food, clothing, emergency housing, medical care, trauma counseling, legal services, and job training.
We also support their efforts in countries around the world such as Sierra Leone and Cambodia where they work to educate communities about the dangers of human trafficking, advocate for long term reform, and provide assistance to the victims of the human trafficking trade.
