Microfinance Program in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The people of the Democratic Republic of Congo have endured years of internal political and social conflict resulting in devastating economic instability and human need at the most basic level. The Congolese live with poverty, uncertainty, suffering and hunger. Many are displaced and live in communities where there is no clean water, medical care or adequate nutrition. Approximately 1,200 people, many of them children, will die each day.

In the midst of this instability, many Congolese are trying to rebuild their lives, establish microenterprise businesses and provide for their families. This is difficult in a country where formal financial credit is not available, and where getting a small loan to start or expand an entrepreneurial venture is impossible.

Microfinance is a practical and tangible answer for this type of need, and at RED lantern we actively support World Relief’s Microfinance Program in the Congo called Hekima. Small loans – initially 50-$75 – are given through locally governed, community based groups to individuals who can then use the funds to start a new business or increase an existing one. A stall at the market can be rented to sell vegetables; a sewing machine can be purchased to sew clothing; a larger plot of land added to increase crops grown. Training and support is also given to these individuals who desire to work hard to provide for their families. The majority of these are vulnerable women.

These loans not only open up a door of opportunity and a chance to move out of poverty, but they empower these individuals to live productive lives. As the loans are paid off, their sense of self respect increases. Greater financial independence creates more stable homes and encourages community well-being. Children are properly fed and sent to school. Families become economically self-sufficient for a lifetime.
